Think of Us (TOU) operates as an R+D lab for child welfare. We take on strategic projects with the goal of causing “good trouble” and, ultimately, driving concrete, structural changes in policy, practice, resource flows, power dynamics, relationships and mental models. Our ultimate goal is to integrate Lived Experience at every level, ensuring everyone touched by the system has the conditions they need to Heal, Develop and Thrive.

We work across the ecosystem of current and former foster youth, child welfare workers, philanthropists and policymakers to Spark, Support and Drive to systematically center lived experience touched by the system.

Note: Most of our roles are fully remote. A select few are based in DC or LA, which will be specified in the job description if applicable.

The Role

The Director of Development will serve as the department lead with responsibility for raising philanthropic funds and cultivating key relationships. You will consistently deliver world-class output and will meet (and exceed!) revenue targets consistently, year over year. While you have a knack for big picture thinking, you are an executor at heart with a knack for designing processes, building tools, and getting things done.


We are entering 2022 with an annual fundraising goal of $6M - and over $2M already committed! This role will be responsible for executing the annual development plan, launching a “Think Tank,” strengthening our Development Operations, working with the Comms team to expand our presence and, most importantly, work with the CEO and Managing Partner to raise funds across individual and institutional donors. Preferred candidates will be self-motivated, deadline-driven multitaskers.

Responsibilities

  • Inform and execute Think of Us’ annual fundraising plan
  • Secure financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations - strategize and execute on asks to raise a minimum of $6M annually
  • Create a Think Tank (key advisor network) to serve as TOU advocates and champions 
  • Oversee the data entry and implementation of Hubspot including fully updated prospect lists, donor pipelines and compliant data entry and gift processing
  • Develop and maintain ongoing relationships with key donors; take lead in organizing and producing virtual quarterly investor updates
  • Prepare and submit grants, proposals and reports; work independently and with our experienced copywriter
  • Create fun prospecting + cultivation strategies including speaking engagements, Jeffersonian dinners connected to the CEO’s travel, and event partnerships
  • Work with the Comms team to develop digital fundraising strategies and to create powerful fundraising materials

Requirements

  • 5-7+ years of professional experience including exceptional track record in fundraising OR business development
  • Functional knowledge of fundraising practices, strategies and principles.
  • Knack for empathizing with donors and clearly communicating our organization’s mission, seasoned at managing relationships and making asks
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to build strong cross-functional relationships and work collaboratively
  • Flexible & hands-on working style - strong critical-thinking and decision-making skills
  • Technology Aptitude - fluency in and/or comfort to learn GSuite, HubSpot + other tech tools like Asana + Slack
  • Deep commitment to our mission and nuanced understanding of systemic, structural racism and inequity
  • Lived experience and/or proximity to child welfare, whether as former foster youth, kinship family or other is a plus
  • Understanding of how to center the lived experience of those touched by child welfare in EVERY aspect of your work

Salary:

$90,000 - $100,000 - with flexibility based on experience
