Vice President of Engineering

Think of Us is at an incredible moment in our journey to transform child welfare - and is looking for a VP of Engineering to bring their deep expertise and vision to our work, designing and delivering solutions across software engineering, data science and cloud technologies.

The VP of Engineering will lead TOU's engineering, data and product teams, charged with harnessing the power of technology to move our mission of a new child welfare system forward effectively.

We are looking for someone who loves working cross-functionally to solve problems, brings deep technical expertise into the room to build brilliant solutions, and manages a team to execute those solutions. This person should love being a part of the “building stage” of organizations, and get excited by the idea of creating structure and results from a myriad of ideas and opportunities.

Examples of what you and the team will accomplish could include:

• Managing a team (currently a combination of in-house and external developers) to design a unique digital wraparound model that gives kinship caregivers, adoptive families and young people direct access to traditional and non-traditional resources, creating a clearer pathway to support for those who need it.
• Leading the partnerships with tech companies to co-develop a new youth portal to be deployed in state and local agencies nationally.
• Key advocate providing critical, real-time quantitative and qualitative data on needs of current + former foster youth to better inform practice and policy.

Strategy and Design

• Partner with our Leadership Team to formulate a vision for how tech will be best leveraged across TOU; develop and own the strategy with responsibility for executing against the vision.
• Drive ideation, evolve the roadmap, and lead org-wide adoption of new technologies inside of an ambiguous or developing context.
• Identify opportunities for both customer-facing and internal tooling solutions.

Leadership

• Maintain a lived experience/customer-focused outlook to deliver tech and data projects to market.
• Own our tech stack: evaluate new technologies and make decisions on their adoption with an eye towards our end users (e.g. government, non-profits, rural users, etc.) while verifying that all technological practices adhere to regulatory standards, compliance and best practices.
• Identify and implement innovative technologies that yield competitive advantage.
• Monitor KPIs and budgets to assess technological performance.
• Effectively communicate our software goals, planning process, project initiatives, team innovation, and results to various audiences and stakeholders.

Execution

• Make decisions, in collaboration with the Executive Team, on behalf of the company’s technological requirements.
• Manage tech budget, including determining the most effective staffing model (best allocation between the internal and offsite team) to maximize ROI.
• Manage technology + data teams to successfully execute our goals, creating a forward thinking technical vision for your team, while also moving day to day implementation forward.
• Build quality assurance and data protection processes.
• Supervise system infrastructure, including internal tooling, to ensure functionality and efficiency.

• 3+ years of leadership experience including strategy and setting technical direction and leading engineering, product and/or tech teams,
• Direct experience in the following:

• 5+ years developing scalable systems. Current stack includes C#/.NET with an openness for other languages
• Leading a team on a redesign or creation of new major products and features at scale including offsite developer teams
• Building and running scalable and reliable systems including deploying production software on common cloud infrastructure (e.g. AWS & GCP)
• Optimizing and managing data, including understanding of security and compliance

• Deep commitment to our mission and nuanced understanding of systemic, structural racism and inequity
• Lived experience and/or proximity to Child Welfare, whether as former foster youth, kinship family or other, is a plus

Salary:

This role has a salary range of $150,000 - $160,000. We are looking to fill this position immediately - applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
